Contact Lens Evaluations
At Sea Eye Care, our team provides comprehensive contact lens fittings for new wearers as well as re-evaluations for established ones. Many patients go year to year getting the same contact lenses finalized without trying anything new. Although we will certainly finalize any old prescription that is still fitting well, safe for the eyes, and providing adequate vision; Dr. James Komornik does contact lenses different than most.
Dr. Komornik will look at a patient’s corneal map measurement (corneal topography), corneal curvatures (autokeratometry), refractive findings (“which is better one or two”), and slit-lamp examination of the front surface of the eyes to determine multiple contact lenses that will fit, be safe, and provide sharp vision for the patient. He then will give trials of those lenses (usually two or three different brands/designs) for the patient to compare in his or her real world. Checking vision by reading letters on an eye chart does not give a good indication of how a patient will function with the lenses, and Dr. Komornik understands that.
A team member will then reach out to see which lens was preferred and the contact lens prescription can be finalized over the phone, and contact lenses can be ordered and shipped straight to a patient’s house. If there is any problems with the vision, comfort, or if any part of the contact lenses feels “off,” that phone call can serve as an opportunity to schedule a contact lens re-evaluation visit or a chance for Dr. Komornik to order new lenses for a patient to try. The contact lens evaluation fee includes the above measurements, trials, and as many follow-up visits required (in a 60 day span) to get the prescription finalized.

Medically Necessary Contact Lenses
Dr. Komornik specializes in medically necessary contact lens exams for patients with corneal conditions such as pellucid marginal degeneration, keratoconus, severe dry eye, anisometropia, and post-surgical corneas. Dr. James Komornik fits patients in corneal RGP and scleral contact lenses for disease management of these conditions, and fits modern lenses that utilize new technologies like aspheric edges, multifocal optics, and more. He has extensive experience in fitting patients with advanced corneal disease and strives to provide patients with comfortable fitting lenses that provide the clearest obtainable vision. Dr. Komornik has worked at the Will's Eye Hospital's department of contact lenses as well as The Eye Institute's Cornea, Anterior Segment, and Specialty Contact Lens department. He is one of the few doctors in Tidewater to be a Fellow of the Scleral Lens Education Society.
Corneal RGP lenses provide premium optics for patients with conditions that cause irregular corneas. The lens is stiffer than soft lenses, so in a way provides a new front surface to the eye for the light to go in clearly without being distorted from the corneal condition.
Scleral lenses are similar in how they provide clear vision, but are larger and land by the white part of the eye (the sclera) and are filled with saline which provides premium comfort. Scleral lenses are used in patients with normal corneas as well, who are intolerant to soft lenses, have bad dry eye disease or eye allergies, or who have high prescriptions that these lenses can account for better than other forms of correction.

Orthokeratology
Orthokeratology (also known as Visual Shaping Treatment/VST and Corneal Reshaping Technology/CRT) is when a patient where's a specially designed contact lens during sleep that acts like a retainer to change the fluid dynamics in the cornea. With these changes, some nearsighted patients can have their prescription neutralized from this process over-night. In the morning, the patient takes off the contact lenses and he or she can see clearly all day without any correction (glasses or contact lenses).
VST is FDA-approved for the management of nearsightedness (also known as Myopia). When these lenses are used in kids, the progression of nearsightedness can be slowed down. This is a process known as Myopia Control.
Dr. James Komornik at Sea Eye Care is certified in orthokeratology for both Euclid Emerald as well as Paragon. VST can be used in patients who are interested in LASIK or other laser surgeries who are not candidates or who cannot afford the procedure. VST is typically half the cost of LASIK, with the same efficacy.
